Closed Feature: Shell context menu does not support a Visual Studio 2008 sln file which contains a vcproj file [20945]

Right-mouse clicking on a Visual Studio 2008 sln file which contains a vcproj file produces the following exception:

Microsoft.Build.Exceptions.InvalidProjectFileException: "The project file \"MyProject.vcproj\" is in the \".vcproj\" file format, which MSBuild no longer supports. Please convert the project by opening it in the Visual Studio IDE or running the conversion tool, or use MSBuild 3.5 or earlier to build it."

The exception does not produce any error messages and so the shell context menu simply does not get displayed.

As part of this task, I also recommend logging any exceptions to the event viewer for example.

I'm afraid not. MSBuild Shell Extension is open source though, so you could simply copy the code needed to show the error/warning window. Also the NAntMenu (http://nantmenu.codeplex.com/) have a similar menu, so if you prefer xaml over winforms, you could copy from that project.

I have a PowerShell script that builds a number of solutions and automates some necessary moving of files around. This works fine but obviously if there is an error it makes it quite hard to see what went wrong, so I would like to integrate the error/warning window of your excellent MSBuildShellExtension. Is there any way to do this?

Hi, I was wondering if you support Windows 8?
I'm running Windows 8 RTM Enterprise Edition x64 and I have Visual Studio 2008 SP1, 2010 SP1 and 2012 installed.
 
The installer ends gracefully (I run the x64 one for version 2.1), but when I right-click, I have weird behaviors:
on .sln and .csproj, nothing happens.
I renamed a .sln into .proj and I have the MSBuild menu, but no sub-entry
I renamed a .csproj into .proj, I have the MSBuild menu, but with only Help, About and Profile entries. Profile entry in turn has an empty sub-menu.
 
Note that the sample solution I examine was created with VS2010. But maybe having VS2012 installed modified things?

Hi, I just wanted to let you know I just installed MSBuildShellEx 2.1 x64 on another Win8 machine, and had no problem with this one... This means the issue I experience on my first machine is not easily reproducible.

MSBuild Shell Extension doesn't support .NET 4.5 (yet). What exactly is your problem? Is the MSBuild menu not visible or doesn't the build work?

Like ElWin00, I have the same issue :

I've installed the framwork 4.5, uninstall the v1.2, restart and then install the v 2.1( with the latest version is the same), but it won't work, can you guys could give me an advise ?

Nope,
When I find time I may do some tests directly on the source code base.
I've downloaded it and managed to build though I had some difficulties doing so... (version mismatch for wix & shfb, windows 8 blocking execution...)
I may have a look at the code to try understand what happens...

I also noticed the extension was working with "real" .proj, by this I mean hand-made .proj, not renamed csproj.

I just installed this and it is picking up the wrong version of MSBuild (2.0 instead of 4.0). Is there any configuration anywhere where I can tell it the location of the "right" version?
